I know this may sound strange, controversial and goes against what you’ve been taught. But if you observe carefully, top online marketers don’t use social media to sell. 

Those top income earners that are currently promoting their company and products on Facebook were not using Facebook to sell when they first got started back then. They were using the offline method to build their business, such as cold callings, being active in business networking events and so on. It was their offline method that brought in the income, not through Facebook.

So, if you want to get your income mainly from Facebook or any other social media platforms, then you should avoid this mistake.

Mistake #3: Over-posting

Opposite to the Mistake #2 above, some people are over posting on Facebook. I have seen people that are posting more than 5 times everyday.

But over-posting will make you look spammy, especially when you are sharing other people’s content and not your own content, or when you are posting about your company and products.

Yes, Facebook will start to see you as SPAM and not letting people see your post. In other words, it hurts your algorithm.

Ideally, you should only post once or twice a day. If a post is doing well, don’t post again that day to avoid the algorithm competition with your post.

Mistake #4: No personal content

Facebook is a place where people come to socialize. If you post only about your business, products or services, that would turn people off. People will either start to unfriend you or quietly unfollow you.

My most popular and highly engaged posts are those that I talk about my family and my life.

Mistake #5: Too many shared content that’s irrelevant to you and your friends

This is similar to Mistake #4. But instead of posting about your business, you are sharing all about other people’s content. 

It is alright to share some valuable content from others once in a while if that’s a good content that provides value. But don’t overdo it.

Sharing too much of other people’s content will have two problems. First, it makes you look spammy. Second, Facebook algorithm doesn’t favor post sharing. This is why this type of posts are usually low in visibility and engagement.

If you really want to share about other people’s content, you should add some of your personal thoughts regarding that particular post. Make it relevant to you!

Mistake #6: Posting back to back

Similar to Mistake #3, usually over-posting will have this problem because you are not allowing enough time for Facebook or your friends to see your posts.

Before they can see your first post, you are now hitting them with your second, third, fourth and fifth posts. This will hurt your algorithm.

Ideally, you should space out the posts at least 5 hours apart. If you have to make two posts, make it one in the morning, and another one in the afternoon or evening.

Mistake #7: Copy and paste sales posts

People buy from those that they know, like and trust. So, what you need to do is to get new friends and build a sincere relationship.

The best way to build a sincere relationship is to mingle around with friends that have something in common with you. You may then invite them and see if they are interested to take a look at your products/services. Even if they are not joining your business, or buy your products/services, you can still be their friends and talk about things that both of you like. It’s always friendship first, business second.

Here’s how you should choose the right Facebook groups to join:

Tips #1: Choose a hobby group

Let’s say if you like gym workouts, join the groups that talk about workout tips. If you like cooking, join groups that are talking about cooking tips.

Tips #2: Look for groups with certain specific topics

For example, if you are homeschooling your kids, it’s a great idea to join groups that focus only on homeschooling topics. 

Tips #3: Join professional groups

Let’s say you are an architect, it’s great to join architectural and interior design groups. Or, if you are a blogger, you can choose those groups that are in blogging topics.

Tips #4: Select groups based on your identity

For example, if you are a mom, you can join those groups that are only for moms. 

Tips #5: Stay away from business groups

Usually, the members of the business groups have their own agenda. They are there not to build a friendship. They are there to promote their own stuff, spamming their business links, hoping to get sales from the groups.

These business groups usually are ads groups with many members in the group, but very low engagements in the group posts.

#4: Update your Bio section

Are you aware that Facebook lets you add a short Bio to your profile to help your friends learn more about you? You can write up to 101 characters in your Bio, and it will always be public.

The Bio section is not hashtag friendly, so no need to add any. Do not use emojis for a concise summary. Emoji takes up more characters.

Some ideas to use fewer characters:

Replace “at” with @, “money” with $, “and” with &.

Make it short and straight to the point. 

#5: Add photos to your Featured section

This section is public on your timeline. Choose photos that you would like to highlight so that people can know you better. Again, for the same reasons mentioned above, do not use company product photos here.
