Why Being Resourceful Is Your Number One Entrepreneurial Skill?

“Oh I don’t have a good connection to start my business.”

“Oh I don’t have many friends to start a network marketing business.”

“Oh I don’t have money to start a business.”

“Oh I don’t have time.”

“Oh I am too old and not young enough to get started.”

“Oh I am not good at talking to people, so I think I am not suitable for sales even though it could change my life.”

Does it all sound familiar to you? Ya, I bet you have been saying that to yourself!

We use these excuses all the time because it’s easy to blame just about anything for our failures. But many of us didn’t realize that what we think is our problems, it’s not really just our problems because it happens to everyone, including those very successful entrepreneurs. The only difference is that 80% of people will stop at these excuses while the other 20% of people will turn these excuses into acknowledgments. They acknowledge these problems (such as lack of money, lack of time, etc.), and turn their mind into thinking how they could overcome them. That’s what makes this 20% of people become very successful.

I like this particular quote from Tony Robbins:

“It’s not the lack of resources, it’s your lack of resourcefulness that stops you.” ~ Tony Robbins

In short, being resourceful is actually your entrepreneurial skill or ability to solve problems. In life, we are all full of challenges. This is especially true as an entrepreneur. When you are able to solve problems, you are the winner!

How To Be Resourceful?

The good news is being resourceful is not a natural-born talent. It is a learnable skill that we develop over time. You do not need to pay thousands to attend a full course to learn this skill. All you need to do is start turning resourcefulness into a new mindset, start applying it on a daily basis in every area of your life.

#1. Be Open-Minded

When you are open-minded, it changes your ways of thinking. It helps to give you the resourceful mindset to look at what’s in front of you that you can fully optimize. Being open-minded also means accepting what you don’t know so that it will lead you to find out the answers. Often, it is through the answer-finding process that gives you whole new perspectives of how to work around your situations, and this is also when your imagination of all possibilities starts to kick in.

#2. Never Give Up

Believe that you are capable of handling any problems.  While it might be difficult at that time, you just need to believe that you might take a longer time, but you will surely be able to finally achieve your goals after solving whatever problems lie in front of you. A person that never gives up does not need any assurance from other people, they just trust themselves no matter how.

Whenever you are facing any challenges, make sure to visualize yourself accomplishing your goals and celebrating your successes after overcoming those challenges. You can even write down all your little successes in your diary. It will fuel you when you are in difficult situations.

I love this saying from Jeff Bezos, the Founder of Amazon:

“The whole point of moving things forward is that you run into problems and failures….. Things don’t work, you have to back up and try again. Each time you back up and try again, you’re using your resourcefulness, you’re using self-reliance. You’re trying to invent your way out of a box.” (Quoted from Business Insider)

#3. Think Long Term

This is related to Point #2 above. Those that give up are those that think short-term. Only those that think long term will never give up, and this is what makes them so different and successful.

“Long term thinking is the lever that lets you do things that you could not do or even conceive of doing if you were thinking short term… If everything has to work in two to three years, then that limits what you can do. If you give yourself the breathing room to take say, seven years, all of sudden you have more opportunities.” (Quoted from Jeff Bezos In Business Insider)

#4. Leverage

I learn this great idea from my business mentor. With today’s technology, we don’t have to work alone. We can always leverage on systems, technologies, platforms, communities, etc.

For example, if you wish to start a business or make some extra income, but time and money are your main concerns, you can always be open-minded to all possibilities or even to try out something new that gives you great leverage. Besides technologies and systems, we should also leverage other people’s experiences. Don’t be afraid to speak up when you have a problem. Don’t go into a complain mode when speaking up about your problems, but address them properly, letting people know that you are looking for their input.

Joining some useful communities related to your business niche is also a great way to leverage their experience and input. You can go to Quora or some great Facebook groups. These are great ways to start with if you don’t want to spend money hiring a consultant.

#5. Put Them On Paper

When you “see” the problems with your brain, it can be overwhelming. Put them all on paper instead, and you will be able to see clearly what are those problems, which ones should be given priority and how to solve them one by one. When you write down your problems on paper, it helps you to chuck them down, segmentize them into small problems that can be solved easily.

So here you are, the five simple tips to train yourself to be resourceful. If you are a parent, teach your child this valuable skill too so that they can advance in their life.
